🌊 When you stand on the shore of Liptovská Mara today, with a view of the majestic Tatras and the surface sparkling under the sun, it is hard to imagine that ordinary life once pulsated under this body of water. Liptovská Mara is not only the largest water reservoir in Slovakia, it is also a symbol of sacrifice for progress and a testimony to the change that forever rewrote the history of Liptov.
As early as the 1950s, people began to think about building a reservoir on the Váh River in the Liptov region . The impetus was mainly the need to protect the lower Liptov and Považie regions from frequent floods. In addition to flood protection, the future dam was also to provide electricity generation and water supply for industry and households. The construction of the dam on the Váh River was one of the largest projects of its time. The construction work itself started in 1965 and lasted ten years – until 1975. After its completion, a water area with a capacity of over 360 million cubic meters of water and an area exceeding 22 square kilometers was created.
This extensive water management project required great sacrifice – more than 4,000 people from thirteen villages that were flooded due to the construction of the dam had to leave their homes. Among them were Liptovská Mara, Parížovce, Sokolče, Demčín, the original part of Liptovská Sielnica and Paludza. The residents were moved mainly to new neighborhoods in Liptovský Mikuláš or to newly built housing estates in the vicinity.
Only a few of these villages have survived to this day. One of the most striking symbols is the 13th-century church of St. Peter, which was dismantled and moved to an archaeological open-air museum near the dam. The preserved Gothic church near Liptovská Mara today serves as a reminder of history and a silent witness to what once stood on the site of a flooded area.
